 Summary

 Boruto Manga Chapter 47

The latest manga release of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations was amazing. I really enjoyed all the information we got in ‘Predestined Fate’ and I can’t wait to see what happens next. However, I’m a little disappointed that the overall narrative arc in Boruto is the same as what we got in Naruto.

The problem started with Kashin Koji being able to engulf Jigen in flames. While Boruto worried that Jigen would be able to absorb flames due to karma, Kawaki told him that it was not possible because flames are not made of chakra. But then it looked like Jigen was absorbing all the fire and I, like Boruto, was very surprised. As if the mark of karma hadn’t already been overcome, right?

Fortunately, it was explained that Jigen was shrinking the flames instead of consuming them. I appreciated learning more about Isshiki’s special ability. It has been shown that he can shrink and regrow inanimate objects around him. The only living being he can use this ability on is himself. I mean, who would have thought that a powerful villain in the Boruto franchise would be similar to Marvel’s Ant-Man? Ha!

‘Predestined Fate’ was full of twists and turns. At one point it looked like Amado had betrayed Naruto by taking advantage of the Hokage’s kindness. I liked how the creative team (Mikio Ikemoto and Ukyou Kodachi) kept the tension going throughout this chapter.

As far as I can tell, there were three major revelations this month. The first dealt with how traces of karma from other vessels disappeared when Otsutsuki was completely reborn. This meant that due to Isshiki being forced to use Jigen’s body to resurrect, Kawaki’s Karma Mark disappeared.

Now I’m not sure if Kawaki will get the Karma Mark back from Isshiki or if Momoshiki (or some other Otsutsuki) will give it to him. I say this because we know (from the first chapter) that Kawaki’s body won’t stay without karma for long. So it will be interesting to see what happens to him in the upcoming chapters.

The second reveal focused on showing Isshiki’s true form. In my opinion, Isshiki has a very cool character design (complete with some very strange looking pants).

The third reveal finally shared Kashin Koji’s identity with the readers. Yes, he is Jiraiya’s clone. But with the fandom speculating (for a very long time) that Kashin was a clone, the reveal was kind of a “meh!” for me. It was nice to get official confirmation. I wonder how Naruto will react to the news if (and when) he finds out.

Come to what I did not like; the title ‘Destiny’ said it all. One of my biggest gripes with Naruto was how the narrative always mentioned hard work and determination, only to boil the hero’s journey down to being born odd.

The same thing happened in Borut. You were either born special or you are useless. Naruto and Sasuke are the reincarnations of Indra and Asura. And we know that Boruto and Salad’s genetic makeup makes them very special as well. That’s why I constantly roll my eyes whenever Boruto or Naruto talk about working hard to achieve their goals. This is also one of the reasons why I am a fan of Sakura Haruno. She doesn’t belong to any particular clan or bloodline and has achieved greatness through real hard work and perseverance.
